THE LOVELY BONES

I have read the book The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold three times now, and this says something because usually I don't re-read books (Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo would also be an exception) rather pass them onto the next person. In this book a young teenage girl gets murdered by a whack-job neighbor in a cave that apparently he made just such an occasion and where her body lies while her family looks for her. The book is entirely seen through her eyes as she narrates how her family copes with her missing, later found dead, and how her father gets suspicious of the neighbor.

This book has recently been made into a movie set to open in January 2010 in which Mark Whalberg plays the father of the teen. The critics have ripped it to shreds so much so I think I am going to wait (not to mention the commercial previews are so-so, nothing that screamed "I gotta see this!") and put it on my Netflix list when it hits DVD status.

The book reminds me of the poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye ~

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the star-shine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

Letters From Home

Have you ever needed a quick and inexpensive gift idea for a teammate, friend, or family member? This one cost me less then $12.00 to make and I have 8 sets (I kept two cards a piece for myself) ready for when I need something quick. I found these "value" note cards for 1.99 at a local store. Each had 10 cards in their package. I already had the lavender ribbon from another project so that basically was free. I put one card from each package in one set so the receiver will receive 5 different blank note cards and then tied a ribbon around each set (cost: approximately $1.00 a set). One also could add a forever post stamp on each one as well. Wa-La! Gift giving on a budget!

The Mouse

I have had the above dresser since I was a tot. I believe it came from my grandparents farmhouse but I am not 100% certain on that. I do know it's been painted many colors: white, pink, blue, rustic brown, and then black. About 10 years ago, I decided I was going to strip it down to the bare wood but the drawers were the only thing I completed before I realized I have no such patience, and so there it has sat looking like this ever since.

I have talked about painting and distressing it for about 2 years now and just did so yesterday. (H-U-R-R-A-Y!) I scuffed the black paint with my new sander (The Mouse made by Craftsman) I found on clearance for $24.95 at Sears (Merry Christmas to me!) about a week ago. I then put two coats of white semi-gloss paint on the entire dresser. The articles I had read on distressing said to wait at minimum of 4 hours but I waited about 9 before I started to lightly sand the corners of the drawers and dresser itself. Lastly, I put a dab of paint on my brush and did quick swoops over the spots I thought looked too bare.

Wa-la!

PECAN TREAT

One of my teammates passed these pecan treats around the office yesterday, here is the recipe:

1 egg white
1 cup cold water
Stir egg white and water until foamy
1 pound pecans
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup sugar in the raw
1/4 teas salt
1 tsp cinnamon

dump pecans into water mixture and coat, drain and top with sugar mixture
pour on to cookie sheet and bake at 275 for 1 hour, stirring every 15 min.

Merry Christmas everyone!

P.S. The same teammate and her husband gave me a set of metric wrenches for Christmas!!

RIGHTY TIGHTY LEFTY LOOSEY

Let's just put this out there.....I hate depending on others for...well...pretty much anything. Maybe it's because I don't want to put anyone out or I don't want to feel the pang of disappointment when they fail me, either way it's something I avoid if at all possible. Unless of coarse, I am asking to be taught so I can learn.

Back in my late teens I was determined to figure out how to change my own oil on my car. I asked my boyfriend to instruct me how to do this without any hands on help from him. As I rolled under the car on the creeper he and his cousin cracked a few beers. First, I was to unscrew the oil filter from underneath the car. "Just remember: righty tighty lefty loosey babe." Thing 1 yells out as Thing 2 giggles between gulps of brew.

I start to loosen the filter and hot oil runs down my arm. Nice. I let it drain while looking around underneath trying to figure out what was what. When the time came, I put a small amount of oil on my finger and ran it around the top of the new filter before putting it back in place. As I start to roll out from underneath the car, my butt length hair that was in a pony tail gets caught up in the wheels of the creeper...so tight I can not stand up. Note to self: wear a bun or braid while working on cars.

This amused Thing 1 and Thing 2 greatly and neither one were very quick at helping me get untangled, but once they did I finished the job. I never have changed my oil since, but at least I can say I did it!

Current day: My front headlight burned out. I purchase the new bulb at a local auto parts store but when I popped the hood I saw that there is a bar running across where my fingers need to go to get to the burnt bulb. I go back in and ask for a wrench. They think I am stupid. "You don't need any tools, just unscrew the bulb and snap the new one into place." I am immediately annoyed. I come across another employee and hope for better results. I ask him for a wrench. He looks like I asked for a million dollars. He too, insists, I need no tools to do this task.

I point him to my vehcile. He walks over and looks under the already popped hood. "Oh. Gee. I guess you will need a wrench to loosen these bolts and then you can change out the bulb." "You don't say?" I respond sarcastically. I had to come to see this was a lost cause but damned if I was going to give this place anymore of my money knowing very well they could have borrowed me a wrench (or if they were sooooo worried I was going to steal it, then loosen/retighten the bolts for me!).

So I went over to a teammates to borrow one of her husband's wrenches...well truth be told he actually changed the bulb as I watched not that I asked him too. He just walked out of his garage and started doing it, but at least I can say I know how to do it!

Lesson learned here? I need a set of my own wrenches.

Bake-A-Thon 2009

Last evening was the office's annual Bake-A-Thon for our doctor's. It was hosted at a teammates home that looks as though it was ripped straight out of a Better Homes & Gardens magazine. I was asked to document the event through photographs this year. Here are a few of them. I hope everyone of you have a GREAT day!!

Christmas Is Coming

You can find photo (credit) here

It was 1983 and Cabbage Patch Dolls were the hot item for Christmas that year. My mother was working a full time job during the day, trying to run a sewing business on the side at home at night for extra cash, and raising two little girls on her own. Purchasing one doll was going to be hard enough financially, but two? Forget it. It was completely out of the budget. So that Christmas she hand made my sister and I each a "Cabbage Patch" doll.

They were completely made out of cloth with knots and puckers for a nose and mouth. She even painted the eyes on and had sewn on yarn hair. (I got a real Cabbage Patch for my birthday 6 months later)

I still have her. She lays wrapped in tissue paper in my cedar chest. She wears a blue dress with a white lacy apron and without a speck of dirt anywhere one her. When my divorce was being finalized during the Christmas holiday a few years ago, my mom could sense that I was down. She told me about how she would feel a little blue on Christmas Eve when my sister and I were with Tim and my stepmother for the night, so she'd drink wine and finish working on our gifts. She then asked if I had ever really looked at the fingers of my doll. I replied that I had not, turns out ma was three sheets to the wind finishing our dolls, and gave them each 5 fingers and a thumb! We both had a real good laugh.

I am about the same age now as she was that Christmas, and I cannot phantom the stress she must have felt around the holidays. Being a parent is tough enough without adding doing it alone and with bills, but she did the best she could. One of my most vivid childhood memories was listening to the sound of her sewing machine run as I fell asleep each night. If I listen hard enough, I can still hear it.

DECEMBER 25TH

Photo: My grandfather's Bible in his native tongue. He was also a Shepard raising sheep on the farm.

A few days ago, my sister sends me this email on when Jesus was really born. Apparently there was a conversation on this topic the day I was leaving at the airport between my mother, her, and her husband. None of which I recall so I must have really been in shock? I mean while reading this email it was like finding out Santa wasn't real (thanks twisted stepsister!) all over again. I had no idea that Jesus, the baby in the manger, supposedly born on Christmas was truly born sometime in the spring. This is because Saint Luke says: Shepards were abiding in their field, keeping watch over their flocks by night. Apparently Shepards only attend to their flock day and night only during lambing time, which is in the spring. Otherwise in the winter they are kept in the corrals unwatched.

Supposedly the good o' Catholics wanted to use trickery to convert Pagan's into Christianity by having the birth of Jesus Christ to co-inside with their holiday of Yule/winter solstice (day of rebirth of the sun God) so wha-la, they picked this date for a compromise.

Now that I sit here thinking about it, maybe I simply misunderstood the plays acted out in Christmas program at church as a kid? And from there on out I just assumed he was born on Christmas, rather then we simply celebrate his birth at Christmas because nobody kept good records of birth back then (and in some 3rd world countries they still don't) and somebody felt the need to put a date out there.

Anyhoos.....back to the email. I shall note it started off with: "A surprisingly number of people believe he was born Dec 25".....I was one of them. At any rate, I will still celebrate his birth at Christmas AND I learned something new, so I guess it's all good.

DEAD END

Are you happy that 2009 is nearing it's end? I'm at a crossroads. On one hand, this year was filled with many disappointments in which I had no control over. Whether it be in regards to multiple missed opportunity(s) or people coming to light on who they really are, I am beyond thrilled the year is over. Yet on the other hand I wish not to dismiss all the wonderful little things that make each day marvelous or for the great memories throughout the year that I will cherish forever. So even if people continue to let me down, the doors keep getting slammed in my face, for the times I feel I have failed and reached a dead end, I am not a quitter and the only way is up from here! 2010 is going to be spectacular because I will make it so!

Love yourself enough to do the same.

#1

PHOTO: I was surprised with VIP/Suite tickets to Friday nights game!

Photo: We made the jumbo-tron!!

A few weeks ago I was walking through the mall during my lunch break with one of my teammates. I came across one of those kiosk's that sold sport logo ed items such as fuzzy slippers, gnomes, Santa hats, and these nifty #1 finger mitts. I went online to see if I could find a SIOUX #1 mitt to order for my ma, sister, and myself for the college hockey game we were planning on attending during my stay for Thanksgiving, and although I found them, the website was not currently taking orders due to it was still being constructed. Crapola!

I asked my ma to look around at their local mall but no such luck so she suggested that she make them herself. I sent a photo of it, my sister drew a pattern on paper, and my ma went to work. They turned out GREAT! We used them at both Fri/Sat nights games. We even made the jumbo-tron!

One of the many great memories from the weekend. :O)

In The Eye Of The Beholder

I admit, I never really appreciated the scenery I lived in growing up. It was b-o-r-i-n-g, flat, and the winters were beyond cold. Now that I take photographs as a hobby, I looked at things a little differently (although still COLD!) while I was visiting. Here are some of them. I hope this message finds you all healthy and well!
